Photo by Boštjan Lah, 2024Transport: Cargo highlights the pressing issue of rising road freight, which has grown by 30% in recent years. Today, 20–50 million trucks travel the world’s roads, and transport accounts for nearly a quarter of global CO₂ emissions. Over the past 20 years, emissions rose by almost 70%, showing that as global trade expands, so do its environmental and social impacts. Speed and accessibility drive economic growth, but also intensify climate change, resource depletion, pollution, and violations of workers’ rights.
The story follows a truck driver who finds himself under severe time pressure from his employer, while obstacles on the road only accumulate and intensify his distress. The night brings a chance encounter, and the morning dawns with a shocking event that prompts a profound reflection on moral and ethical issues. Yet, behind the personal narrative unfolds a broader, systemic conflict—transport as a part of the global economy that shapes our lives and environment, while also raising questions about responsibility, injustice, and the social burdens we carry.
The performance uses this personal story as a metaphor for wider systemic issues. Its powerful conclusion doesn’t offer answers but leaves a series of questions lingering long after the show ends. It doesn’t moralize, instead opening a space for reflection on mobility, consumer habits, daily choices, and the policies shaping our world.
